Welcome. I’m Beth, a UK-based journalist working across radio, digital and social platforms. I’m drawn to stories that reveal how people connect, adapt and communicate in a constantly changing world, especially younger audiences who are reshaping how news is found, shared and understood. Here you’ll find a selection of my recent reporting and projects. If you’d like to collaborate, commission a piece or simply say hello, you’re always welcome to get in touch. But first, here’s a bit of background about me and what I’m currently looking to achieve through my work.
How I got here: I grew up in a single parent household, where my Mum would listen to the news every day, saying it connected her to a world outside of daily life. This raised me with the knowledge in my early years that looking at the bigger picture would often help to make sense of the smaller things, just as art and music create moments of wonder, and science works to solve the problems ahead of us, news helps us understand the world in front of us, bringing audiences into the present with clarity and context. When I was 16, I saw first hand how a local news story can develop into a narrative which starts real conversation and cultural shifts, as my younger sister led a nationwide campaign that became a major story. Seeing exactly how strong reporting can carry a story from one household into the public conversation, was what made me decide that I wanted to be part of this service.
What I do: I’ve worked in news for over four years since graduating from Liverpool John Moores University with a First Class degree in journalism, and having gained experience in online, print, broadcast and social media, I believe the key creating good stories is staying open to new possibilities and listening to the world around you. But a core focus for me is constantly developing my style of reporting to stay in line with how news is consumed, especially by younger audiences, which are becoming increasingly hard to reach through traditional storytelling. Online news is constantly shifting, and while people want to understand the world, they often feel overwhelmed or disconnected. My aim when telling stories is to look at where the gaps are, and assess which narratives hard-to-reach audiences are most interested in.
Previous work: My most recent role as an Under 35s writer for WalesOnline allowed me to develop my own voice as a reporter for demographics becoming disengaged with news, from stories which affect audiences on a smaller scale, to writing timely pieces based on trending news and opinion articles which start a conversation. My pieces have reached millions of readers, and have been featured on news sites all around the UK, from regional websites such as the Manchester Evening News to national titles such as The Mirror, OK! and more.
